Wages raised, Jessop workers rejoice

Kolkata, 12 March 2010: The management and workers’ unions of Jessop & Co Ltd have signed a long term wage settlement on Thursday 11 March, resulting an immediate raise to all the workers on the rolls of the Company. The agreement with 3-year validity commences from March 1, 2010. Apart from the basic wages, Jessop workers are entitled to Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Night Shift Allowance, Hot Allowance, Site Duty Allowance, Leave Travel Allowance etc. The agreement provides for nearly 10% increase in the gross amount. The agreement also encourages multi-discipline skill among workers with defined monetary benefits.

Welcoming the wage settlement, Samir Mukherjee, General Secretary of the INTUC-supported Jessop union said: “Thanks to the intervention of the Chairman, the management did not insist on a DA freeze, as seen in some of the other engineering companies.”

Asit Sen, General Secretary of the CITU-backed Jessop union, called it a moral victory of the workers and added that the increase in the number of the casual leaves and emphasis on free supply of safety materials for the workers reflected a worker-friendly attitude of the management.
