Dunlop exceeds commitment, inducts 1202 old hands

Kolkata, 16 October 2007: Dunlop India Limited has inducted 1202 workmen as permanent employees in its Sahaganj unit out of those who were on the Company’s rolls when the erstwhile management closed the plant. It may be recalled that the new management, in its agreement with the trade unions, had committed to intake 1179 workmen. However, considering the immediate plans for the Sahaganj unit, the management decided to increase the number to 1202 after completing absorption of the agreed 1179. Taking casual workers and contract labours into account, Sahaganj now is employing over 1600 workers.

The Sahaganj plant has started operations 7 days a week from last Sunday, 14 October. Commenting on the development, Mr Pawan Kumar Ruia, Chairman of Dunlop India Ltd, said: “We’d like to see Dunlop operating 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This is a step toward making the Sahaganj unit a cost-effective, high quality manufacturer of tyres and industrial products. Very soon Sahaganj will surpass all its previous records in production and productivity.”

On 14 October Sahaganj also witnessed daylong walk-in interviews for technical positions at various levels of the plant. Out of the 1000-odd candidates interviewed on Sunday, 81 have already been issued appointment letters, while a further 170 are being selected for progressive absorption.
